Powered by Adobe Firefly, Generative Expand beta brings another generative AI tool that saves time. New content will be auto-filled just by around you, and framed images will now need only a few seconds to be transformed to fit your layout.

Composition in an Adobe InDesign document is tricky. Normal positioning issues, as likely to be met by designers: change the scene of the image and/or its size. This sometimes requires a new image, or manual editing or overstretching for re-creating the image to fit the new space, which is quite a time-waster.

If you use Generative Expand, you have to quickly fill this void in the desired frame. This again can be achieved in Adobe InDesign without leaving it. Selected is an image frame and if the image does not fit this frame exactly, only select Generate so that the image fits easily into it. Or you can put in a text prompt for how to broaden the picture and integrate it all with your desired background.

In the example below, you see the image does not fit as it should. With Generative Expand, you have options to immediately fill up referred frames with new content, such as three other flowers, for instance. Just choose the one that fits your frame.

Then you might also want to create a social graphic, such as an Instagram story with a 9:16 ratio, as an example in the same image. Using Generative Expand, you can extend the image vertically to fit into the desired frame. Or you could simply input a specific background type you want in the expanded image using the text prompt.

Disclaimer: Generative Expand (beta) is available in any where Adobe offers a service, in English only and built with safety for commercial use in mind. It is not available to users in China mainland.

Adobe’s Creative Suite has three mighty design tools – Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign – each used for different tasks in the creative workflow. It is essential to understand the differences between these tools to pick the right one for the right task.

Adobe Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop represents the industry leader for raster image editing and manipulation. It boasts unparalleled photo-editing, retouching, and digital painting abilities, through which users are allowed to operate pixel-based images at an exceptionally detailed level of granularity. A significant strength is that Photoshop enjoys an incredibly versatile layer-based system, advanced tools for selection, and powerful filters. It’s the go-to choice for photographers, digital artists, and web designers who need to manipulate photos, create digital artwork, or design web elements. However, Photoshop shows limitations when working with vector graphics or multi-page layouts.

Adobe Illustrator

Adobe Illustrator specializes in creating vector graphics. In contrast to Photoshop, which works on pixels, Illustrator uses mathematical equations to create artworks that are perfectly scalable and don’t lose quality with size. Therefore, it’s indispensable for logos, brand identities, and technical illustrations. Clean, scalable graphics require Illustrator’s precision tools, pathfinder operations, and advanced typography. While it can handle some basic photo editing, it’s not designed for complex photo manipulation or multi-page document layouts.

Adobe Illustrator

Adobe InDesign is the final part of the set, the absolute leader in page layout and publishing. It’s designed for multiple-page documents, including magazines, books, brochures, and annual reports. Its strengths lie in a well-developed master pages system, advanced typography controls, and powerful document management capabilities. InDesign is great at merging text and graphics into a well-balanced composition while maintaining consistency of style over the entire document. Even though InDesign is able to incorporate both raster and vector graphics, its best use would be importing already finalized assets from Photoshop and Illustrator, as that is not exactly where it thrives.
The true power of these applications emerges when they’re used together in a professional workflow. A typical project might begin with creating vector graphics in Illustrator, editing photos in Photoshop, and then bringing these elements together in InDesign for final layout and publication. This workflow leverages each program’s strengths while minimizing their limitations. The Creative Cloud integration among these applications allows for seamless file transfer and updates, making it easier to maintain consistency across projects.

Conclusion

Despite some similarities in functionality, all applications are distinct and have been calibrated for one specific activity in the creative process. When it comes to modifications, digital brushes, and designs created through pixels, Photoshop is the quintessential choice. When working with any graphics, texts, and images, Illustrator remains the first choice since it can be resized without losing any quality. For advanced types of control that require a layout such as brochures, magazines, or e-books, InDesign is specialized for that.

All of these applications serve a purpose in honing in on a specific task more efficiently. If a logo needs to be designed that shrinks for business cards and expands for billboards, Illustrator is the safe bet. On the other hand, if you’re editing product images and need composites, you cannot beat Photoshop for that. When putting all of these elements together for one book-ready print, nothing beats InDesign in precision.

The true power of creativity lies when people put the applications together and start combining features. It becomes unimaginable when a logo gets designed in Illustrator, product images get modified in Photoshop and the text plus other layout fundamentals are added in InDesign to make a striking marketing brochure.
